McKenzie Therapy Q & A

What is McKenzie Therapy? Does it require special training?

McKenzie Therapy, or The McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy, is a world-renowned system used to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal problems and injuries. It was developed by New Zealand-based physiotherapist Robert McKenzie more than 60 years ago.

The Pinnacle Sports Performance and Rehabilitation team is trained in the McKenzie technique and uses it to evaluate spine and joint injuries and guide treatment.

I have joint pain. Can McKenzie Therapy help?

The Pinnacle Sports Performance and Rehabilitation team uses McKenzie therapy to treat various musculoskeletal problems, including:

  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Joint pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Work injuries
  • Auto-accident injuries
  • Pregnancy-related pain

McKenzie Therapy is unique in that it complements your body’s natural healing process. It doesn’t use medication, surgery, or other invasive techniques.

What does McKenzie Therapy involve?

At Pinnacle Sports Performance and Rehabilitation, McKenzie Therapy involves a four-step process, including:

Step 1: Assessment

During the assessment phase, your provider reviews your medical history and asks about your symptoms. Then, they complete a movement assessment, evaluating your ability to perform a series of easy exercises. Your provider observes you during these activities to see if they exacerbate your symptoms.

Step 2: Classification

After you complete the movement assessment, the Pinnacle Sports Performance and Rehabilitation team makes an official McKenzie Therapy classification.

There are four classifications –– derangement syndrome, dysfunction syndrome, postural syndrome, and other.

Step 3: Treatment

Your provider develops a personalized treatment plan that uses stretches and strengthening exercises to reduce or relieve the pain entirely. No two McKenzie Therapy treatment plans are exactly alike. The Pinnacle Sports Performance and Rehabilitation team makes recommendations based on your unique symptoms and needs.

Step 4: Prevention

Once you achieve lasting relief from your symptoms, the team moves to step four, or the prevention phase. This phase uses patient education to prevent future injury and help you achieve optimal wellness.

How long does it take for McKenzie Therapy to work?

The time it takes McKenzie Therapy to work depends on the severity of your symptoms and the underlying cause. Some people experience significant relief after just one week of participation, but for others, it takes three weeks to a month.

Make sure to follow the team’s instructions and attend each of your checkups at Pinnacle Sports Performance and Rehabilitation.
